The first difference is made by the major version:

• 3 is for Windows NT 3.5
• 4 is for the Windows NT 4
• 5 is for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Home Server
• 6 is for Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7
